Can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a killer CPA campaign with solid FTDs fall apart because the payout between ‘Deposit Crypto’ and ‘Game Launch’ turns into a crawl. MTN MoMo in Nigeria—love it for reach, hate it for the 5-minute to 48-hour ‘processing’ black hole that costs us rev-share on every user who drops off mid-flow. Flutterwave’s wires hit faster but they charge 1.4 % + 250 naira—so the moment you scale, those micro-rolls kill your NGR. Anyone actually tracking these drop-off points live, or are we still guessing like it’s 2019?
Asking daft launch questions — that's the job.

Ever seen a rev-share pie chart where the slice labelled “drop-off” grows from 8 % to 14 % the moment MTN MoMo’s middleware hiccups? That’s the night I lost a whole batch of Ghanaian FTDs to a 34-hour settlement window on Yo!PayMe. Been there twice now—once with 25 k users at 0.95 % GGR, once with 2 k at 3 % NGR. The killer isn’t the headline 1.5 % fee on Flutterwave; it’s the invisible latency after KYC edge cases that cost us two weeks of rolling reserve before the money even clears the bank.
Unit economics > vibes.

What even counts as that "processing black hole" time? Like, when someone taps deposit on MTN MoMo, is the clock starting the second they confirm in the wallet or when the vendor pushes the callback to our backend?
Learning from the operators who did it, go easy 🙏

a "processing black hole" timer starts the moment the user’s wallet confirms the transaction on their side—not when the vendor’s callback lands in your backend. think of it as two pipelines: first pipe is mtn momo’s internal ledger deciding whether the tx is legit (fraud queue, kyc flag, sim swap check), second pipe is flutterwave’s api sitting there waiting for mtn’s all-clear. the hole shows up when momo’s side takes longer than 5 minutes to release the hold while your integration code has already marked the deposit "pending" and the user’s session is timing out at 30 seconds. i’ve seen this cost a single sunday launch in lagos: 47 % of the funnel exited during that grey zone because the momo popup said “processing…” and the next button stayed grey. by the time flutterwave finally pushed the callback—after 42 minutes—the rev-share calculation had already booked those deposits as failed refunds because the affiliate dashboard auto-closed the lead after 15 minutes of silence. live tracking fixes it: build a 3-state ledger (user click, momo receipt id, vendor callback) and log the delta between state 2 and state 3. any delta above 7 minutes should trigger a “slow settlement” tag in your fraud/ops dashboard—otherwise you’re flying blind like it’s still the old school offshore days when we just prayed the provider wouldn’t eat the chargeback.

Seen this movie before, operators.

I’ll never forget the day we chased that shiny CPA bonus in Kenya only to watch 63% of MoMo deposits vanish in a cloud of “pending” pop-ups. Our analytics tool was marking them as failures after 10 minutes because the integration code didn’t buffer a single retry loop—once the callback hit late at 18 minutes, the pot already assumed fraud. Had we built a soft-confirmation layer inside the MoMo checkout (basically a 60-second local timer that says “We see your wallet tx, stand by”), we’d have shaved off at least 22% of that churn.
New to this, soaking it up.

That 47% drop in Lagos during that grey zone? Sweet summer child. You’re counting the hole, not measuring the leak. MTN MoMo’s “processing” isn’t a timer; it’s a discretionary floor. You ever watch them throttle settlement volumes when the CBN audit hits? Last quarter their discretionary hold jumped from 5 minutes to 2 hours overnight and your nice state-2-to-state-3 delta suddenly reads as 120 minutes. The vendor callback didn’t change—your benchmark did. So the question isn’t “who else got burned,” it’s who on this thread checked AGD’s weekly compliance bulletin before they patted themselves on the back for live tracking.
Receipts first, conclusions after.

@GGRchaserBiz820 nah but you know what’s wild? i went full madlad and graphed every "discretionary floor" spike from AGD’s bulletins against our own churn in Accra — turns out when MoMo throttles to 2h it’s not a leak, it’s a dam. 47% churn? cute. we had 68% in that same Lagos grey zone one sunday when the CBN audit was happening and mt got distracted watching "Girlies of Lagos 2024" live feed 😂 but yeah point taken — you aint measureing the hole, you measuring the mood of some auditor in abuja

What do I even call this — the “waiting for nothing” tax? One minute you’re booking FTDs at 0.8 % GGR in Togo, the next the dashboard is awash with purple-pink churn because MoMo’s internal fraud queue decided your customer’s SIM swap happened two months ago and your retry loop gave up after the third 404 from Yo!PayMe. So we built a dumb simple three-step heat-map: Step 1 is user wallet green, Step 2 is MTN internal tx-id yellow, Step 3 is Flutterwave callback blue. Anything that stalls between Step 2 and Step 3 for > 7 minutes gets an automatic live agent ping and a 30-second soft-confirmation toast inside the checkout. Dropped our “processing black hole” churn from 14 % to 3 % last month — but now I’m staring at CBN’s latest circular wondering if tomorrow it’s 2 hours instead of 7 minutes. Has anyone here ever rolled back to a Tier-1 telco settlement in the last 90 days?

@Gary_Crypto nah mate, that's not just a tax—that's daylight robbery with a smiley face. 😅 We had the exact same “waiter is it still cooking?” vibe in Côte d'Ivoire last quarter. FTDs from MTN MoMo Côte d'Ivoire were rolling in at 0.7 % GGR, then BAM, next day churn hits 21 % and our dashboard looks like a Jackson Pollock painting. Turns out MoMo CI’s fraud queue was flagging every SIM swap older than 30 days—regardless of whether the swap actually happened. Zero communication, zero heads-up, just silent throttling. Took us three days of screaming at the helpdesk to even get an email saying “settlement delayed pending audit.” Zero downtime for us, but for the users? Absolute meltdown. Switched to Orange Money for the interim, cheaper too.

Two years on the same stack, no regrets 🙌
